“PPY sits within the broader Sydney Dance Company organisation, offering students direct experience of a full-time ensemble company environment. What is your vision for students and their future trajectory by the end of the program?
“The aim is for graduates to leave with a clear understanding of who they are as artists, what they are drawn to creatively and the kinds of professional environments in which they aspire to work.
We want them to understand their own practice in relation to a broader industry landscape and to move forward with curiosity, openness and an informed sense of the pathways available to them.
Technical development is fundamental, but it is the investigation of professional practice, artistic awareness and resilience that is most important to supporting a sustainable career in dance.”
Many students describe PPY as personally transformative, a place where they learn to take risks, think independently, and discover who they are as artists. Why is that kind of development so important for emerging dancers today?
“Today’s dance artists are expected not only to perform at a high technical level but also bring their whole selves to the studio and actively participate in creative development, collaboration and problem-solving.
For many dancers, entering a co-creative environment can feel unfamiliar, as there is often no fixed or predetermined outcome. The development process requires artists to make decisions, test ideas and respond to creative offers in real time.
Through PPY’s exploration of that process, dancers develop confidence in their own thinking and instincts. Over time, this leads to greater artistic clarity and the ability to contribute meaningfully within a range of creative and choreographic contexts..”
PPY attracts dancers from a wide range of backgrounds and pathways. What qualities do you look for in students applying to the program?
“The selection process is intuitive and highly considered. We look for dancers who are curious, open and poised to engage fully with a process of sustained development.
Through auditions and interviews, we look for individuals who are ready to be challenged and who contribute to a diverse cohort where dancers support, question and elevate one another.”
